ABOUT SARAH HURST

MEd; C-IAYT; RYT 500

I have a long-standing interest in other cultures, present and past. As an undergraduate, I studied anthropology and religious studies. But at the same time, as a collegiate athlete, I also had an interest in the physical body and coaching. To learn more, I studied exercise science and coaching in graduate school. Several years later, when I started a yoga practice, I immediately connected with its physical embodiment and its ancient roots. I was intrigued with the holistic, interconnected nature of wellness it promoted.

In 2004 I took my first yoga training with Nancy Ruby at Yoga Motion in Montana, and for the next 12 years, I taught hatha and vinyasa yoga at schools and yoga studios. In 2016 I enrolled in a therapeutic yoga program at Yoga North in Duluth, MN. My mind was blown! Through SomaYoga, I learned to listen to my body. I learned how patterns of muscle contraction and movement are linked to life events and natural human reflexes... and much more! Profoundly influenced by Yoga North’s SomaYoga, I enrolled in 3 consecutive trainings over a four-year period. By the end of 2020, I completed Level 2 Yoga Therapy certification.

My approach to Yoga Therapy is deeply rooted in Somatics – a method of neuromuscular reeducation. Somatic movements (from Thomas Hanna’s Somatics), are gentle and encourage attention to the sensations of your body – to interocept. This is a quiet, single-pointed practice that takes on a meditative quality.

I am so grateful for my educational experience at Yoga North. The teachers are authentic, knowledgeable, kind and patient. With their inspiration, I now hope that I can pass on what I have learned to others.

There is a wisdom is your physical, bodily presence that is luminous and profound.
